This has always been one of my favourite quotes.

We have established that I am a believer, a struggling Christian. Mainly because I have too many unanswered questions.

I think my affinity for this quote comes from my capacity for empathy. I was always of the belief that those who struggle most, would thrive and heal given the right enviornment. So extending a kind hand or forgiveness was just a prerequisite.

I lived that way for a good chunk of my life.

Yes lived, I no longer live by those values.

It took me a long time to learn my lessons, but learn them I did.

There are people, lots of them in fact who seek out emphatic people. They don’t do it because of their desire to have that type of person in their life. They do it because they know they are tolerant, forgiving and gullible. Yep having a kind forgiving heart makes you gullible, because you always want to believe in those you are forgiving.

Mostly after a while you wise up, but by that stage the damage has been done.

After it happens a few times, you become much more adept at recognising the signs. Or if you’re like me, you rarely bother with people. Once you learn what some are capable of it’s best to save your heart for those you are sure of, and yourself.

You have to grown into the latter, because if you had a healthy love of self, you would have learned the lessons much sooner.

I always found it so hard to break ties, give up on people, to let them go, I was so easily drawn back in.

Now it’s one of the easiest things to do. Once I realise someone is not genuine, I walk away. I don’t even want to know why, it’s of no consequence, because they won’t be coming back into my life. I don't mean that to sound arrogant, it's just self preservation, and to be fair, they probably don’t give a toss, and that’s perfectly ok.

I still love the essence of that quote though, because in an ideal world kindness and empathy should heal the broken.

So you have a whole lot of givers and a whole lot of takers. The climate of the world would indicate that the takers have the upper hand. I don’t think it’s that the givers turn into takers, they just become hardened, which is a great shame for those that genuinely benefit from kindness.

I guess we still pray for them though, because humanity is kinda hanging in the balance.
