It’s a quandary…

⬆️ I shared this quote that I wrote today and it got me thinking…

Life is super difficult sometimes because I have really strong values. They shape most of my interactions and, if I’m honest, most of my relationships too.

The thing is, you don’t always find out who someone really is straight away. Sometimes it takes years. By then you’ve built a friendship or a relationship, and then one conversation suddenly reveals something that just doesn’t sit right with you.

Often the other person doesn’t understand why you can’t just ‘agree to disagree.’ Most of the time, I’m happy to. But I’ve realised there are some things I can happily agree to disagree on, and there are some things I can’t.

Some things don’t just challenge my opinion. They challenge my values. So what do you do when you’ve known someone for years and suddenly realise something about them doesn’t fit within your moral compass?

For me, I have to say, ‘That’s not okay with me.’

Not because I expect to change their mind. But because staying silent would feel like compromising my own values.

Sometimes the other person decides they’ll just never bring it up again. But is that enough? I honestly don’t know.

It’s a quandary.
