To be honest, I do understand how creators can end up feeling worn down by it all. There was a time when comments affected me a lot more than they do now I was genuinely shocked by the level of hatred people were comfortable sharing, and by the amount of misogyny that existed once you started talking about certain topics.
I think in the beginning I believed that if I appealed to people’s empathy, if I explained things well enough, they might start to see the humanity in others a little differently. What I eventually realised though was that many of them weren’t interested in changing how they saw the world, they were far more interested in trying to change how I felt.
For a while I wrote about it a lot, mostly because I was in a kind of disbelief that people could be that heartless. Now I understand that some people simply are, and lately they seem far more comfortable showing it.
These days I mostly skim past those comments. Occasionally I’ll throw out a reply, but I’m no longer interested in being dragged into a losing battle with people who aren’t actually looking to understand anything.
Protecting your peace sometimes just means refusing to carry the weight of other people’s bitterness.
